What is Bellydance?
Bellydance is the broad generic term used to describe a wide range of styles originating from the Middle East. The French originally coined the phrase 'danse de ventre' in their 19th Century travels, but in the Middle East it is known as 'Raqs Sharqi' or dance of the east' and includes beledi, ghawazee, saiidi, zaar, tsiftitelli classical, cabaret and theatrical dance. Classes cover all aspects of the dance including technique, rhythm, music, and choreographed performances.
Why learn to bellydance?
There are many reasons to learn to bellydance. First of all it's fun. Suitable for all ages,
shapes and sizes, bellydance promotes grace, co-ordination, strength and flexibility.
Unlike many other forms of dance, bellydance is gentle on the body. You are never too
young or old to start. Learn to be comfortable with your body, and to enjoy the easy social
companionship found in the class situation.
What are the health benefits?
The health benefits are numerous:
• muscle tone is improved throughout the body
• pelvic floor is toned and strengthened
• increases mobility in joints and vertebrae
The greatest benefit of all is the confidence gained in being able to find
your own self-expression through a dance which allows for the individual.
